Causes Of Shoulder Pain

Your shoulder is built for movement. With help from the surrounding muscles and tendons, it lets you lift, reach, rotate, push, and pull with ease. But because it’s involved in almost every upper-body motion, it’s also one of the first areas to develop pain when things start to break down. Rotator cuff irritation or tears are among the most common issues we see.

Most shoulder problems stem from overuse or sudden injury—especially during weightlifting, sports, or other activities that demand overhead movement. Conditions like bursitis, rotator cuff tendonitis or tears, and shoulder impingement are all frequent culprits.

Shoulder Pain Symptoms

Symptoms can vary based on the specific shoulder issue, but most shoulder injuries limit movement and cause pain—especially when lifting, reaching overhead, or putting pressure on the joint. Because the shoulder is involved in so many daily motions, irritation is often easy to aggravate.

Depending on what’s going on, you may notice:

  • A dull, aching pain that increases with activity

  • Stiffness or reduced range of motion

  • Trouble sleeping due to shoulder discomfort

  • Clicking, popping, or catching sensations

  • Pain or difficulty lifting your arm overhead

  • Tenderness when pressing around the joint

  • Pain that may travel into the neck or down the front of the arm

  • Swelling, bruising, or visible irritation
