Causes Of Leg Pain

Your legs are built to generate power, absorb impact, and support your body through every step, stride, and daily movement. With help from the surrounding muscles, ligaments, and joints, they allow you to walk, run, climb, squat, and stay active with stability and control. But because your legs work constantly and manage significant force, they’re also a common area to develop pain when tissues become tight, irritated, or strained. Muscle imbalance, joint restriction, nerve irritation, and overuse are among the issues we see most often.

Most leg problems develop from repetitive stress, improper mechanics, or sudden injury. Activities like running, jumping, lifting, prolonged standing, or even sitting too long can contribute to discomfort over time. Strains, tendinitis, hamstring or calf irritation, IT band tightness, nerve-related pain, and overuse conditions are some of the most frequent contributors to leg pain.

Leg Pain Symptoms

Symptoms can vary depending on the specific leg issue, but most leg problems limit movement and cause discomfort—especially with walking, running, climbing stairs, standing for long periods, or pushing off during activity. Because the legs absorb force with every step and support your full body weight, irritation is often easy to aggravate.

Depending on what’s going on, you may notice:

  • A dull, aching pain that worsens with activity or weight-bearing

  • Stiffness or reduced ability to move the leg comfortably

  • Trouble sleeping due to leg discomfort, cramps, or pressure

  • Clicking, popping, or tight “pulling” sensations with movement

  • Pain or difficulty walking, running, or climbing stairs

  • Tenderness when pressing along the thigh, calf, or shin

  • Pain that may travel up toward the hip or down into the foot

  • Swelling, irritation, tightness, or visible inflammation
